UE5 | Ninety Days | Fantasy Cavern

One of my scenes for the "Ninety Days" project at Epic, in which I was tasked with concepting, designing and executing a shot in 3 to 5 days directly in UE5. For this shot, the creative brief from my Art Director was very open-ended. We needed a travelling shot in a dark fantasy environment, with the camera tracking some kind of unique vehicle moving through an environment. I decided on a suspended monorail system, with some kind of vehicle moving through a dark cavern.

As the concept development was moving along, I replaced the initial steampunk monorail vehicle with a more rustic timber sailboat which was very quickly modelled, as if the cavern was once filled with water. Initially the portal at the end of the cave was a simple skull, but as I evolved the design, I decided it would be more interesting as a Cthulhu-esque gateway to the underworld, in line with the rest of the nautical themes in the scene.

Monks watch on ominously as the cargo is transported through the Cthulhu gate, into the mysterious realm beyond the portal...

I was honoured to collaborate on the Ninety Days project with some amazing artists, including:
